In: The Educator CEL For teachers review teaching techniques> class organization> Authority / discipline October 1956 The theme of our last Congress in Bordeaux was academic achievement, eminently vast subject which we applied to go around, reserving to study later, separately, the various essential factors of this performance.

These factors include the issue of discipline is undoubtedly a central concern of the almost unanimous educators. It will be the theme of the next Congress Nantes Modern School, our friend Gouzil prepared with method and obstinacy perhaps unprecedented. Comrades had complained last year in Bordeaux, our plenary sessions were too theoretical and that ultimately we were with a relative eloquence of speech that are not moved in academic meetings.

We must return to our emergency discussions tradition of a psychological impact, educational and original and useful social, but still facing a technological improvement of our working conditions. For us, education – and Congress – are pure games of the mind but the cooperative search of a better education. To achieve this, we must not allow to reporter – if informed and eloquent as they are, talk to us.

The rapporteurs must only collect, compare and use documents that will them to the mass of our readers. This is to prepare now this vital work at the base, it is for the groups to be immediately put to the work that we publish below a level, which is not intended also to be full, questions to study. Groups or comrades who have shown the most activity in this cooperative work will be invited to report to Congress: Discipline in the School 1. What is Discipline?

What are- the various formulas used in the past and in the present? These are the Army and the school that gave the Disciplinary word meaning rather pejorative. If an individual living alone, like Robinson on a desert island, it would be free to act as he pleased, except that it would however take into account the reactions of the environment: plants and animals in particular. But when he saw with other individuals, it is necessary as to establish a more or less favorable modus vivendi.

This is modus vivendi which we call discipline. It would be at the beginning of this discussion to take stock of the various experiences of modus vivendi, disciplines occurred over the centuries. We will then see the problem as it currently facing in our French schools and the solutions we recommend.

Besides, most of these forms of discipline are still practiced today in France and outside France. – authoritarian discipline, the strongest or the winner. Are there still slaves? – The divine discipline with its various implications. – Moral discipline. – The patriarchal discipline. – The cooperative discipline. – The self-government and self-discipline. – ?The discipline had. – labor discipline. Contact us quotations from authors and other information on these points.

2. Three forms of discipline. – There is not a valid discipline for children and a valuable discipline for adults. Discipline is one, such as education. We will compare very often Discipline in children Discipline in adults.

We will have many more chances to reason correctly. If a state is subject to the authority of a leader, a teacher: – Either the master is feared by his power and exemplary punishments he strikes those of his subjects who infringe. And order reigns. – Or the master, while keeping its total authority, knows to be just, generous, compassionate, understanding. He is loved. It can then send a form of discipline that is very human.

Provided that it is forced to require its homeworkmarket
subjects is not too radically contrary to their needs and concerns which case there would necessarily opposed, shock and repression. – Or the master recognizes the rights and duties of those who live with him and helps to create a society in which establishes a just and humane discipline. We will have to look at the school these three forms of discipline. 3. The authoritarian discipline of the master control for children who have to obey.

This authority is based not on the child’s understanding but on force and repression. This form of discipline was common in the early century. It is far from gone. It tends rather to be reborn with overcrowded classrooms.

We will study the foundations, operation and evolution. This issue could be a special part of the report. Gather now and give us the elements of this report: – The discipline once, as we have more or less experienced. – Punishments. Their form.

Their range. – The rewards. – Disciplinary procedures at the school and outside the school. – How children were trying to turn the regulations and authority. – Do you still public or private schools or children’s homes who practice this authoritarian discipline? 4. The mixed authority. – The social and political forms have evolved into a more or less democratic, School theoretically, with a start of practice also evolved into a discipline which leaves the master its full authority and responsibility, yet mitigated by calls for understanding and action for children.

Almost all classes between now search that could compare, politically, a kind of constitutional monarchy (hence a net delay). – Master of attitude: platform, homework, lessons, arms crossed, silent. – emerging or growing influence of the teachings of psychology that reveals the child’s opposition reasons for such a plan. – Penalties and punishment in general at this mixed school. Establish the range.

We need for that many examples showing that this form of school property on one side touches the formula latecomer to try to steer the other toward a progressive discipline. – The instruments of authority: Textbooks; The director ; The lessons ; The parents ; Homework ; The notes ; The master ; Good-points etc. 5. Modern Discipline, corresponding to the democratic society that develops gradually in the various countries of the world.

It is in this study, especially constructive, we will apply ourselves and for which we will have many examples. Prepare them now: – The life and work in groups; – The sport; – The cooperative discipline; – labor discipline. We have to study how the introduction of these disciplines is difficult and sometimes impossible because: – regulations, schedules and programs; – the impact of school premises, furniture and equipment; – the unfavorable social environment; – the presence of individuals who disrupt the life of the community; – work methods; – Enrollment.
